Also known as an ETF, exchange traded funds are a basket of stocks that are represented by a single ticker symbol and can be bought and sold during market hours exactly like a stock. 

 

Passive management.  Unlike mutual funds that have managers buying and selling individual stocks to include in their mutual funds, ETFs for the most part have passive investment management and hold a set group of stocks within a defined set of parameters.
