What is the real definition of market timing?

Market timing is generally considered to be the timing of buying and selling decisions of financial assets using a strategy containing predictive elements or assumptions on price trends, trend direction, and price movement of the financial asset.

Typically Based on Technical Analysis

Market timing is often based on elements of technical analysis of pricing trends and price movement of a stock or traded financial asset.  Analysis of pricing trends through the use of smoothed moving averages can help to assess overall trend direction.

Trend strength can also be measured with mathematical technical analysis tools to determine how strong a financial asset trend has been in the past.

Market timing usually involves the standard assumption that an existing trend will stay in place, and therefore is using predictive analysis when formulating assumptions about future pricing movement.

Sometimes Based on Fundamental Data

Market timing can also be accomplished by the use of fundamental analysis and reviewing classic fundamental relationships between certain financial asset classes, economic data results, and economic statistics.

Fundamental market timing usually contains more assumptions and is typically more focused on the bigger picture, and is usually not a good method for shorter-term trading strategies.
